With much pomp and ceremony, iconic club Proud re-launched their south gallery, formerly Proud Kitchen, as Proud Cabaret Camden last month.

Those of you who have been before will appreciate the difference the £150,000 makeover has made – luxurious red drapes, leather seats and candlelit booths replace the former, rather minimal interior.

South American chef Martin Januszewski had put together a three course menu of good choice and quality.

Our canapés were a delicate mix as the Kir Royale flowed and the beef bresaola with truffle mayonnaise was a taste explosion. The main course took a long time to come out, but with a variety of skilled cabaret dancers flaunting their wares this was no great hardship.

They were worth the wait too. My beef fillet was rare, tender and deliciously seasoned with garlic and the squash risotto seemed to keep my vegetarian colleague happy. The sea bass fillet looked very tasty too.

Dessert was less spectacular but still pleasant. Decent cheeses, baked Alaska, tarts and chocolate fondue were the order of the day here.

I’ve been to Proud Kitchen’s cabaret nights before and always fond them a poor cousin of Proud’s city branch, but with the new decor and spruced up menu, Proud Cabaret Camden is surely north London’s premier variety dinner.
