Chadli’s ready to show his best form at Spurs in Pochettino’s new system

Nacer Chadli says his brace against QPR shows he is perfectly suited to Tottenham’s new system under Mauricio Pochettino, and that he will be able to produce his best form this season.

Like most of Spurs’ signings last summer, Chadli struggled to make an impact in his first season in England following his £7million move from FC Twente.

The Belgian was offered a loan spell at Swansea in January and it is thought that Tottenham have been willing to sell him this summer to trim their squad.

However, Chadli says he has been determined to stay and prove himself at Tottenham – and he made an immediate impact in his first Premier League start under Pochettino on Sunday, scoring from two crosses in the first 37 minutes against QPR.

“I came back from the World Cup and nobody said I had to go,” he said. “I want to take my chance, I don’t want to rush and go like this, I want to show people what I can do.

“Last season I struggled with injury at the start of the season, came back and physically I was down, so it became a very hard season and I was very disappointed with how it went. You have to go forward and now it’s a new chance for everybody.

“[Our style] is very different and I have never played this system before. But we have to learn it and it can help us improve. I think it’s a good system.

“We have Ade [Adebayor] at the top and then behind him we have me, Christian [Eriksen] and Erik [Lamela], who can change positions all the time. That makes it difficult for the opponents to choose which one of us to pick up. It becomes automatic and we’re trying to play like that.

“For me it’s better to come off the left wing and get into a central position when we have a cross because I can finish it off - or sometimes I can move out to the right. I think it’s good for me.

“We can also get the full-backs into forward wide positions, and it’s happening a lot with Danny Rose and [Eric] Dier. When the full-backs go high, there’s no point in me staying there, high on the wide side, so I have to go into the box. I’m tall and Ade’s tall and we try to make the difference.”

Chadli added: “For me it was important to play well and win the game [against QPR]. If I can score and make assists as well then that always good for attacking players.

“We have a lot of good attacking players with a lot of confidence. You have to make sure you keep playing well so you can stay in the team.”

Tottenham have enjoyed a dream start to life under Pochettino, winning their last four pre-season games and also emerging victorious in their first three competitive matches against West Ham, AEL Limassol and now QPR.

The Lilywhites are now set for a good test of how much they have already improved under Pochettino because, after hosting Limassol in the second leg of their Europa League play-off on Thursday, they take on Liverpool at the Lane on Sunday.

Brendan Rodgers’ Reds won 5-0 in north London in December – ending Andre Villas-Boas’ tenure as Spurs boss – and they also thumped the Lilywhites 4-0 in the return fixture at Anfield in March.

Chadli said: “Liverpool showed last year they are a good team. I think we have something to make right against them.

“I played in both of those games, they were not the best parts of the season - but you have to learn from the experience. It was hard to lose like that because I had never lost like that, but hopefully everybody has learnt from it.

“We are confident and we showed that against QPR. We made it easier for ourselves by scoring early on, but after that we created a lot of chances and that was good.

“I think everybody knows what we have to do on the pitch and that’s also important. The manager says how we have to play and then it’s just a question of being tough physically because we know we have a lot of good players.”
