Transfer news: The re-signing of Tottenham’s Steven Pienaar could help Everton start their season in style, according to defender Sylvain Distin.

Everton defender Sylvain Distin reckons Spurs’ Steven Pienaar is their priority transfer target, and thinks his signing could give them a major lift.

Pienaar, 30, spent three and a half seasons on Merseyside before joining Tottenham last year, but after a successful loan spell back at Goodison Park last season, a permanent transfer away from White Hart Lane is likely to be completed soon.

“Steven is a priority for us,” defender Distin told the Daily Star. “When he came in on loan last year, he changed the way we played. It’s great to see that he might be coming back.

“Ultimately, it’s not about how you start, it’s where you finish. Hopefully we can keep everyone together, add players like Steven, and things will be great.”
