Per Mertesacker thinks Arsenal are ready to challenge for silverware

Per Mertesacker thinks Arsenal’s transfer activity this summer puts them in a stronger position than last year.

The 27-year-old Germany international, who made 27 appearances for the Gunners in an injury-hit debut campaign, believes their new signings can help them challenge for honours this season.

Arsenal yesterday completed the signing of Spain winger Santi Cazorla from Malaga, who has joined fellow new boys Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud in pre-season training.

“I think we have a better situation than last year,” Mertesacker told Arsenal’s official website.

“The team is full of characters, good players and every position [has competition]. So I am looking forward to the season because I think we can show the potential we have in a better way than last year.

The big German centre-back went on to discuss his international teammate Podolski, who was signed from Cologne at the beginning of the summer.

“I try to do my very best [to help Podolski settle],” he said.

“I had the same thing last year and it is good to have a lot of help in your first moments in a new city with a new language.

“Everything is going fine for him and I am very happy that he is here to give his best for Arsenal.

“For us to have him here is a massive impact.”
