Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has hinted that new forwards Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud may not play at the start of the Premier League season.

The pair were involved in Euro 2012 and have been given an extended break and they look set to miss their opening game, against Sunderland, on August 18.

“Podolski and Giroud may take longer than expected,” Wenger said in the Daily Mail before returning from a pre-season tour in Hong Kong.

“I cannot play them in pre-season, so I will ease them in the Premier League.”
