Tottenham strode into the semi-finals of the Capital One Cup with a resounding 4-0 home win over Newcastle, avenging October’s league defeat in the process.

Spurs had thrown away a half-time lead at White Hart Lane on that occasion, conceding seven seconds into the second period en route to a 2-1 defeat. But this game mattered a lot more and the Lilywhites were emphatic victors.

Just like in the previous meeting, Mauricio Pochettino’s side opened the scoring in the 18th minute, with Nabil Bentaleb netting his first goal for Tottenham after Magpies goalkeeper Jak Alnwick dropped the ball in front of him.

And, just like in October, there was a goal in the opening minute of the second half. But this time it went to the hosts as Nacer Chadli doubled the advantage 34 seconds after kick-off.

Newcastle had a golden opportunity to hit back as Ayoze Perez delivered a low cross in front of the goalmouth and Remy Cabella and Emmanuel Riviere failed to score.

But instead Harry Kane scored his 13th goal of the season to put Spurs out of sight, firing low across Alnwick into the bottom right corner with a typically accomplished finish.

And, when he was replaced by Roberto Soldado, the Spaniard immediately found the net himself, following up after Alnwick had dived to save Christian Eriksen’s low drive.

Spurs have been drawn against League One outfit Sheffield United in the two-legged semi-finals, with the first tie being played at home.

Tottenham: Vorm, Chiriches, Fazio, Vertonghen, Rose, Bentaleb (Capoue 79), Stambouli, Townsend, Eriksen, Chadli (Dembele 60), Kane (Soldado 79).
