Spurs boss wishing for a ‘clear week’ with his squad on the training pitch

Mauricio Pochettino believes Tottenham’s busy schedule is delaying the implementation of his philosophy, denying him valuable time on the training pitch.

There were belated signs of improvement – especially without the ball in terms of pressing and aggression – in the recent 2-1 home win over Everton, while there were some positives to take from the 3-0 defeat at Chelsea last week.

However, Spurs struggled at home once again on Saturday in their goalless draw with Crystal Palace.

Pochettino has pointed to a “lack of freshness” and the fact that Tottenham’s opponents have had extra recovery time recently, but he would also like a quiet week with his squad on the training field.

With the exception of the three international breaks, when a host of first-team players disappeared, Spurs have had a midweek match between all of their Premier League fixtures – and that is set to continue into the new year.

“It’s a process,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of concepts, we’re changing a lot of things and when you play, play, play you maybe need more time – a clear week – to work hard and practise and improve the new style.

“I think sometimes it’s good to play three games each week but it’s difficult to coach the team and maybe that’s why we need more time to put our style into practice.

“This [pressing and energy] is what we try to set on the team, and it’s never easy. We need to change it at the beginning in the training sessions. You need to train in a high tempo, to run like we run on the pitch in the matches.

“But it’s not only a transformation in your body and your physical condition, it’s also in your mind. This is why we need time to improve and time to set our style.”
