Mauricio Pochettino has urged his players to focus on Tottenham’s objectives rather than their own futures as the end of the January transfer window approaches.

Indeed, Spurs’ head coach believes it would be better if there was only one window, in the summer, to avoid such distractions.

“It’s a difficult month because the window is open,” said Pochettino. “There’s a lot of interest from different clubs. It’s good for the agents and bad for the manager or head coach because you never know the ideas.

“In football it always happens the same. The players who aren’t playing too much and want to play more, they are not happy and they want to find solutions or to try to find a club to play more.

“This is the game and I understand the game, but we need to be focused on our job and to try to keep our motivation, because now is a very important period. We have very important games and we need to keep our players focused on the games and not their own futures – thinking about the team and the club.

“It’s difficult, it’s not easy. In this moment you say ‘why not have only one transfer window a year?’. Maybe that’s better because then you can manage all the situations of your players.

“There is a lot of different interests in the players which are arriving to them and the club. This is not an easy period but it’s another thing that maybe for the future we need to propose to change.

“Should there just be one transfer window in the summer? From my point of view, yes – to keep all the players focused on the one target, on their objective.

“If not, every five or six months, the transfer window is open and it’s not easy for any club. Maybe it’s one thing to discuss to change in the future. It’s one idea, only an idea.”

Kyle Naughton completed a £5million move to Swansea yesterday, and Pochettino said: “I spoke with him and he always tried to play more than he played in the past. His decision was to find a club where there is more opportunity to play. I agreed with his decision and after the club made the deal with Swansea, he left.

“I was happy with him, with his performance, but he believed that he needed or wanted another situation, to play more than he played. His decision was to find a solution and Swansea maybe give him the chance to play more regularly than here.”

Asked if Aaron Lennon, who has also been out of favour, could be heading through the exit door in the coming days, Pochettino replied: “I think we need to ask him if he is not happy with his situation. I think I can explain the situation of Kyle, but Aaron is our player, he is in our plans.

“He does not need to speak about it. All players who don’t play with regularity in the starting XI want to play. This is explicit. Players do not need to explain to me that they want to play more - I know.

“Will anyone else leave? You never know. I am happy with all [the players], but the situation like Kyle Naughton maybe happens next week.”
