Mauricio Pochettino says Tottenham’s new club captain will be announced on Monday.

Spurs sold Michael Dawson to Hull City last month, and the Lilywhites’ head coach said at the time that he would wait until the transfer window closed before naming the skipper’s successor.

Pochettino was asked at his press conference today whether he knows who will be taking the armband.

He replied: “Yes, on Monday we’ll be communicating the new captain, when all the players are back from their international teams and international games. We’ll communicate it to the players and after that to you. Monday is the day.”

Spurs travel to face Sunderland in the Premier League on Saturday and they have no new injury concerns following the international break.

“[Roberto] Soldado is still a doubt because he has a continued problem with his neck, and [Kyle] Walker is out,” Pochettino reported

“Then it’s only Nabil Bentaleb, who gets back to London this afternoon or this evening, but at the moment all the players are back from their international teams. [Emmanuel] Adebayor came back this morning.”

Walker, who has not played a competitive game since March, underwent lower abdominal surgery at the start of September.

Asked when the right-back might return, Pochettino said: “This is more of a question for the doctor, but I think he improves every day.

“Every day we need to check, and we wait, and hopefully he will be back in a short time, but it all depends on his evolution.”

While Walker continues to be missed, Spurs could field two debutants at Sunderland this weekend after signing centre-back Federico Fazio and midfielder Benjamin Stambouli in the final days of the transfer window.

“In the last two weeks they have been good,” said Pochettino. “They have been discovering the new philosophy and a new football because they come from outside England. Maybe they have the facility to stay in the list [for this match].

“[Stambouli] is a midfielder that is still young, he has the qualities to play in different positions and he can help us in different positions on the pitch.”

Tottenham started the campaign in fine form under their new head coach, winning their first four competitive games – but their last outing was a disappointing 3-0 home defeat against Liverpool.

“It’s only one game that we lost, and we were a little bit unlucky in the key moment in the game,” said Pochettino.

“We’ve analysed it because we’ve had time to analyse it in the last two weeks. I think we’ve watched the game more than 20 times and we’ve analysed every single detail. “We need to improve, we are a team and we need to learn and improve with a new philosophy, but I’m happy with the way we are.

“We need time to improve and time to compete with a team that finished second in the Premier League last season, but I think are consistent. It was only one game and we need to look forward.”
