Harry Kane scored a hat-trick while Erik Lamela netted a brace, including a wondergoal, as Tottenham thumped Asteras Tripolis 5-1 in the Europa League at White Hart Lane.

Kane got the breakthrough and Lamela doubled the advantage just before the half-hour mark with an outrageous 20-yard ‘rabona’.

Lamela found the net again in the second half with a well-struck volley, and Kane then struck twice to complete his treble, taking his tally to seven goals in 10 games for Spurs this season.

Kane ended up in goal after Hugo Lloris was sent off late on, and he immediately conceded a consolation goal from a free-kick.

But the Lilywhites nonetheless earned their first win in Group C and it took them above their Greek visitors, level at the top with Besiktas, who won 4-0 away against Partizan Belgrade.

Mauricio Pochettino named a surprisingly strong side, with Jan Vertonghen, Etienne Capoue, Lamela and Emmanuel Adebayor all starting.

Asteras had the first sight of goal as Capoue failed to cut out a long ball and Pablo Mazza got in behind, dragging his shot across goal.

However, Kane set his sights with a low 25-yard strike that whistled wide of the left post, and the 21-year-old then scored the opener in the 13th minute, showing his confidence again by unleashing another 25-yard strike from the right channel, which flew in off the far post.

Kane nearly created another goal as a quick passing triangle ended with the youngster chipping the ball over the defence for the onrushing Capoue, who was denied as the goalkeeper came out at his feet.

Asteras threatened from a corner as Giorgios Zisopoulos headed over, and they seemed certain to score just before the half-hour mark as Facundo Para got free in the Tottenham box. But Hugo Lloris saved his initial flick at goal and, when the ball came back to him, Ben Davies made a goal-line block.

It proved to be a big moment because Spurs were 2-0 up moments later, with Lamela scoring an outrageous ‘rabona’, wrapping his kicking leg around the back of his standing leg and somehow generating enough power to send the ball curling into the net from outside the box.

After two fine finishes, Andros Townsend nearly got in on the act, whipping a long-range effort just over the angle of post and crossbar – and he then cut inside from the right flank and fired at the visiting keeper.

Tripolis looked the more dangerous side for the opening 15 minutes of the second half, and Spurs continued to look vulnerable to balls over the top and on the break.

At the other end, Lamela drove forward and found Adebayor, who rolled the back for Kane, but his side-footed finish was weak and straight at Tomas Kosicky.

Asteras continued to cause problems but Lamela doubled his tally in the 65th minute with another superb finish. The Argentine’s right-footed shot was blocked but he immediately reacted and met the deflected ball with a left-footed volley which flew in at the near post.

Asteras had another golden chance to score as the ball was chipped in behind the Spurs defence and Martin Rolle was left all alone to unleash a powerful volley from the middle of the box, but Lloris somehow reacted to stick out a hand and make a wonderful diving save.

Kane then piled on the agony for the Greeks, following up after Mousa Dembele’s swerving low shot had been saved and pouncing on the rebound to make it 4-0. He completed his hat-trick soon after, meeting Federico Fazio’s cross with a downward header into the net.

Spurs were cruising but they suffered a late blow in the 87th minute as Lloris rushed out of his box to deal with another ball over the top and brought his man down, receiving a straight red card.

With Pochettino already having made all three of his substitutions, Kane took the gloves, donned the goalkeeper’s jersey and faced the ensuing free-kick.

He seemed to be right behind Athanasios Panteliadis’ low free-kick but the ball slipped through his arms and squired over the goal-line.

Tottenham: Lloris, Dier, Fazio, Vertonghen, Davies, Capoue, Dembele, Townsend (Lennon 83), Kane, Lamela (Eriksen 76), Adebayor (Chadli 77)
