Demba Ba scored a late penalty to earn Besiktas a 1-1 draw as Tottenham were denied a home win in the Europa League group stage.
Harry Kane struck his fourth goal of the season just before the half-hour mark and Hugo Lloris then performed heroics to keep the visitors at bay.
However, Vlad Chiriches made a horrible error three minutes from time, air-kicking at a long ball and pushing the ball away with his hand to concede a penalty – and ex-Chelsea forward Ba finally beat Lloris with the spot-kick.
Elsewhere in the group, Asteras Tripolis beat Partizan Belgrade 2-0 at home, leaving the Greeks top of the group with four points - two points ahead of Tottenham and Besiktas.
Mauricio Pochettino rotated his squad as usual, with Lloris the only player to line up against both Arsenal on Saturday and Besiktas tonight.
The Spurs side was similar to the one that had faced Nottingham Forest in last week’s Capital One Cup tie, but with Dier and Chiriches in the rearguard – having been replaced by Kyle Naughton and Jan Vertonghen in the ‘first team’ – and Kane coming in instead of Aaron Lennon.
Tottenham were immediately on the back foot, with the ever-unpredictable Chiriches giving the ball away inside his own half, while Federico Fazio was caught on the wrong side of Ba, allowing Olcay Sahan a shot which just missed the bottom right corner.
Besiktas right-back Serdar Kurtulus then got in behind on the overlap, seeing his low cross from the by-line deflected behind by Fazio.
Tottenham’s Argentine defender misjudged a cross, allowing Ba to turn and unleash a powerful strike which hit the crossbar as the visitors continued to outplay Spurs in every way.
The Lilywhites were struggling to make any headway, but they took the lead with their first shot in the 27th minute. Nabil Bentaleb turned neatly in midfield and found Kane, who moved to the left and then sent a low 20-yard effort across the keeper and into the bottom right corner.
Besiktas had a golden opportunity to hit back as Jose Sosa lost Ben Davies and delivered a low cross in front of the goalmouth. Ba couldn’t make contact but Sahan arrived at the back post, only to be denied by Lloris’ outstretched leg as the Frenchman made a typically brilliant save.
Spurs were improving as an attacking force though and Davies drilled in an inviting cross, with Kane arriving six yards out but having to stretch and heading over.
Andros Townsend, who had started on the left, was now playing on the right and he came infield and released Kane with a neat through ball, with the 20-year-old firing at Tolga Zengin from a narrow angle.
It was an even start to the second half but Spurs created the first attempt on goal, with Townsend and Benjamin Stambouli exchanging passes on the edge of the box and Townsend whipping his 20-yard shot over the bar.
Besiktas responded with a big chance as Ba beat Chiriches before freeing Sahan, but his shot was too high and Lloris was able to react to tip the ball over the bar.
Tottenham broke quickly, with Roberto Soldado advancing and playing a well-timed pass out to Bentaleb, who unleashed a low effort from the left channel of the penalty area which flew wide of the far post.
But back came the Turkish visitors and, when a cross from the right dropped over Chiriches’ head, Sahan attempted an audacious scissor kick from around the penalty spot, which flew just wide of the top left corner.
The chances were coming at both ends and Tottenham put together an excellent move down the left. Davies and substitute Aaron Lennon played a neat one-touch one-two and the left-back pulled the ball back to Kane, whose fine 20-yard strike drew a fantastic low save from Zengin.
Besiktas substitute Mustafa Pektemek headed over the bar from a corner and Ba then had another huge chance to equalise. Drifting into space between Chiriches and Dier, he pulled a long ball out of the air and seemed certain to score, only for Lloris to get a crucial touch and divert the ball over the bar.
It seemed that the Frenchman’s display was going to be rewarded with three points. But, in the 87th minute, Chiriches allowed Pektemek to get past him and then gently clipped the ball with his hand. Referee Manuel Grafe pointed to the spot and Ba found the bottom right corner to earn a point for his side.
Tottenham: Lloris, Dier, Fazio, Chiriches, Davies, Bentaleb, Stambouli (Dembele 65), Townsend, Paulinho (Lennon 60), Kane, Soldado (Adebayor 79)
