North Middlesex extended their remarkable winning run to eight matches but remain second with just two games left in the title race after leaders Teddington also came out on top.

North Midd travelled to face Twickenham and triumphed in a rain-affected match, staying ahead of the run-rate to win with a total of 189-3 in 38.3 overs after their hosts had posted 240-8 from their 50 overs.

The match started half an hour late and, with more rain forecast, Twickenham elected to bat.

Joel Hughes and Ethan Bamber kept the run-rate down to around two an over early on, and the pressure told as Daniel Lezar was run out after taking 38 balls to score eight.

But Don Manuwelge (43) and Marc Lezar (64) shared a 60-run partnership and Carlos Nunes then hit 43 off 44 balls, while Clint McCabe (15), David Russell (12) and Sanjit Sandhu (18 not out) also contributed as Twickenham posted 240.

North Midd set about a challenging chase with gusto, though, with Liam O’Driscoll – who had the been the pick of the visiting bowlers with 3-33 – hitting 25 off one over and reaching 84-0 alongside Adam Holmes.

O’Driscoll perished after hitting 53 off 58 deliveries while Holmes went on to reach 68, and Rob Fahrenheim (34no), Evan Flowers (9) and Tom Nicoll – who struck an unbeaten 13 off four balls – kept North Midd ahead of the required rate before rain ended the match in the 39th over.

Meanwhile, Hampstead’s match at Stanmore was abandoned, leaving them 10 points above the relegation zone.
