Great Britain's Christopher Tomlinson jumps during round one of the Men's Long Jump at the Olympic Stadium, London, on the seventh day of the London 2012 Olympics.

Newham & Essex Beagle Chris Tomlinson put together an excellent series of jumps but in the end he was overshadowed by British team-mate Greg Rutherford who leapt to a stunning and unexpected gold medal

Rutherford, who jointly holds the British record with Tomlinson, stormed to a brilliant 8.31 metres to join Jessica Ennis as golden athletes on this second night of athletics in the Olympic stadium.

Tomlinson, 30, who often struggles in the big competition, set out his stall early with a first-round jump of 8.06m to take the lead, but he was quickly usurped by Rutherford who hit back with 8.21m.

Tomlinson was third after the first round of jumps, but as the competition intensified, his next two jumps of 7.87m and 7.83m did not improve his mark and he dropped to sixth place.

Fleetingly, he jumped up the field with a fourth round jump of 8.07m to improve his longest jump by a single centimetre, but he was unable to make any further progress and was even frustrated before his last jump as there was a long delay while the 10,000m runners were announced.

It was an excellent series of jumps, but his final position of sixth left him frustrated and once again in the shadow of the brilliant Rutherford who grabbed gold.

Aussie Mitchell Watt was second with 8.16m with Will Claye of the United States third with 8.12m.
