Londoner helps GB to basketball success
London’s Eric Boateng was among the leading scorers as the Team GB men’s basketball squad continued their preparations for the Olympics with a pair of wins over Portugal at the weekend.
Boateng, 26, scored 11 points as GB clinched a 86-66 victory in Sheffield on Sunday, behind only Kyle Johnson (21) and NBA star Luol Deng (14).
Following five successive defeats at their training camp in Texas, Chris Finch’s side fought back from a slender half-time deficit on Saturday to run out 83-68 winners, thanks largely to a dominant third quarter where they outscored the Portuguese by 19 points.
Coach Finch said: “This is sport, you play to win, so of course it’s nice.
“I think we’ve played well in most of our games so far.”
GB are due to take on the United States in Manchester on Thursday (July 19), before travelling to Belgium to take on Tunisia and the Belgians.
Former Haringey Police ABC amateur Erick ‘The Eagle’ Ochieng will get a shot at the British light-middleweight title after reigning champion Brian Rose gave up the belt.
