The promising 23-year-old batsman died when he was hit by a London Underground train on June 18.

England star Kevin Pietersen was among those at the ceremony in Cardiff.

He was joined by England Test captain Andrew Strauss and a host of famous faces from the sport.

Maynard had been tipped to eventually play for England at the highest level of cricket.

Surrey, who play at Kia Oval in Kensington, have also lost skipper Rory Hamilton-Brown.

He has opted to take a break from cricket as a result of Maynard’s death.

At today’s service, managing director of England Cricket, Hugh Morris said: “The presence of so many members of the cricket community tells me Tom was not only a player blessed with extraordinary talent, but somebody whose sense of fun and enjoyment made him a hugely popular figure within our game.

“No-one will feel a greater sense of loss today than Matt, Sue, Ceri and family.”

“What saddens me so much is that we have not only lost a hugely popular and colourful character, but one of the most exciting and explosive young batsmen.”
