Sprinting sensation Adam Gemili could come find himself shoulder to shoulder with Usain Bolt during this summer’s 100m Olympics showdown after he achieved a personal best.

The speedy student, who attends Barking and Dagenham College, shaved an impressive 0.15 seconds off his previous record at a race in Germany earlier this month, making it to the finish line in 10.08 seconds.

The feat makes him the only person from Great Britain to have achieved the 100m ‘A’ qualifying standard for the Games.

Adam, who is studying for an extended diploma in sport at the Dagenham Road college, said: “Competing against sprinting legend Usain Bolt at the Olympics would be a once in a life-time experience.

“I think it would be amazing to take part in the UK Olympics because cheering from home spectators will provide an electric atmosphere.”

His current training regime consists of gruelling four hour stints, four times a week.

He added: “I do a lot of sprinting, circuit training and also go to the gym. Once I finish at college I am planning to increase my training.”

He said the Jamaican world record holder had even passed on some advice.

“Usain Bolt has given me a few pearls of wisdom,” he explained. “He told me to prepare mentally as well as physically.”

Adam will now compete in Olympics trials, held on June 22 and 23 in Birmingham, and will need to hit the 10.18 time target to have a chance of going through to the Games.

He has already won a place in the World Junior Championships, which take place in Barcelona from July 10 to 15.
