Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s will take up a new home as the major store in Tottenham Hotspur’s redevelopment plans, it has been confirmed.

The announcement last week was widely expected as the chain store had long expressed its desire to relocate from its current site on the other side of the High Road.

The 72,000 sq ft store will create up to 250 new jobs - on top of those in the existing supermarket - when it opens in late 2013, with dedicated support in place to help local people access them.

A second Sainsbury’s convenience store, damaged in last year’s riots, will also reopen in High Road this April, creating up to 25 new jobs, the club said last Wednesday.

Daniel Levy, chairman of Spurs, said: “We are delighted that Sainsbury’s will become the supermarket provider in the Northumberland Development Project.

“This will be one of the largest supermarkets of its kind in London and will help bring a greater vibrancy and attract new trade to the area.

“Both ourselves and Sainsbury’s are proud of our roots in Tottenham and are committed to working to deliver major regeneration in an area with such a real need.”
