A contingent from Haringey joined thousands of protesters who marched against government’s austerity measures in central London on Saturday.

Between 70,000 and 150,000 people are reported to have taken part in the protest, organised by campaign group the People’s Assembly.

Green Party leader Natalie Bennett marched some of the way from the City to Westminster behind the Save Autism Services Haringey banner, telling campaigners that she welcomed “an upsurge in activism since the election.”

She told marchers that “austerity is a failed model” and that she was there to “speak up for the disadvantaged.”

Mary Langan from Save Autism Services Haringey said: “It is great to see the level of support for our cause from people from all over the country.”

Sarah Miller, another SASH supporter, added: “It’s great to see lots of Haringey folks here today, including Haringey Alliance for Public Services, supporters of the Trade Union and Socialist Coalition, Unite and campaigns to defend council housing and children’s centres – let’s hope it will give confidence to build the resistance.”
