Families and food lovers descended on Green Lanes in their thousands on Sunday for the second Harringay Green Lanes Food Festival.

An estimated 20,000 people tried culinary delights from around the world and took in street performances and music at the event - double the number who attended the first festival in 2009.

It returned stronger than ever with two music stages and stalls offering authentic traditional food and drink from Turkey, Greece, the Carribean, Ethiopia and Britain among others.

Among the street performers to pull a crowd was Nick Putz, who squeezed inside a giant green balloon only to emerge dressed as Elvis Presley.

Organiser Rob Chau, of the Harringay Traders’ Association, said: “It was phenomenal. It was absolutely heaving and we’ve had lots of great feedback.”

He said he was “knackered” after helping co-ordinate the event, but added: “We couldn’t have planned a more perfect day.”

The festival, which closed part of Green Lanes around the Harringay Ladder, escaped the rain until late afternoon.

Mr Chau added: “It was only a month after the riots, but there was no trouble. It’s a good local community event.”
