Olympic mosaic unveiled on Tottenham bridge

London’s Olympic legacy began in Tottenham last week before the Games had even finished with the unveiling of an eye-catching mosaic.

The new artwork, made from Italian glass tiles, depicts five runners bearing the colours of the iconic Olympic rings and hangs from the Watermead Way Bridge in Tottenham Marshes.

It was unveiled at a special launch ceremony attended by Tottenham Hotspur ambassador Ledley King and Haringey Mayor Cllr David Browne last Wednesday.

The mosaic’s design is the brainchild of local artist Tam Joseph and was completed following 15 weeks of work from a dozen community volunteers.

Mr Joseph, of Turnpike Lane, said: “I thought, ‘what’s the most popular Olympic sport?’ People enjoyed the athletics a great deal so I decided to do the five runners.”

The project was paid for by Haringey Council’s Olympic Legacy Fund and the Lee Valley regional Park Authority, as well as Newlon Housing.
