Muhammed Mukungu, of Wightman Road, Harringay, let two masked raiders into the Gala Bingo hall where he worked before the end of his shift.

The men – armed with a gun and a crowbar – stayed there overnight before grabbing treasurer Carol Bryce when she arrived for work at 7am on May 31, 2010. Ms Bryce was forced to open up the fruit machines and take them to the safe and wait until the time lock opened. Her mobile phone was also taken.

She was then left tied up with cable ties until a security guard arrived an hour later.

Neither of the two robbers have been identified, but Mukungu, 33, and alleged getaway driver Damien Latchman, 27, of Snowshill Road, Manor Park, east London, are now on trial for taking part in the plot. Both men deny conspiracy to commit robbery.

Prosecutor Tom Wilkins said on Tuesday, February 14: “Mukungu was working there as a security guard and the insider who provided the actual robbers with the vital knowhow about the hall security procedures and allowed the robbers in to hide overnight so they could commit the robbery at the most opportune moment the next morning.”

The two men – who covered their faces and wore scarves and gloves to avoid leaving forensic evidence – stole about £40,000.

It is claimed that both men were in communication with a third man “who was at the hub of this operation” and may have been one of the robbers.

Mr Wilkins said: “The Crown says that the evidence that came to light, particularly phone evidence, shows that Mr Mukungu used his privileged position and his knowledge of the building to let the robbers in the rear of the premises and into a room at the rear, probably on the first floor.”

Jurors heard Mukungu “affected surprise” when he arrived at work at the Enfield bingo hall that evening to be told it had been robbed. The trial continues.
