London Riots: New Carpetright building approved by Haringey planners

A Tottenham landmark destroyed during last summer’s riots is one step closer to being rebuilt after planning permission was agreed last night.

The original Carpetright building was demolished after it was gutted by a fire on August 6.

Once it is rebuilt, the High Road landmark will appear almost unchanged - although it will have more in common with its original 1930s design, as architects have decided to remove later additions made to the previous building.

Cllr Sheila Peacock described the fascias which appeared on the building in later years as “unacceptable”, adding: “It is a pleasure to see it going back as it was.”

The building will also boast improved disabled access, more space for bins, solar panels and a roof garden.

The plans were passed unanimously with councillors only lodging one request - for “Rebuilt in 2012” to be added somewhere on the building.
