London 2012: Central London road closures for Olympic women’s marathon

Road closures will be in operation tomorrow as the women’s marathon takes place in central London.

Hundreds of spectators are expected to line the route of the event, which will go past some of London’s most iconic landmarks before finishing at The Mall.

Road closures will be in place from 3am and will stay in place until a few hours after the event has finished.

Tube passenger numbers reached a record high of 4.31million journeys on Thursday and public transport will continue to be busy.

The busiest times across the network will be early in the morning, lunchtime and evening.

The Docklands Light Railway (DLR), Central and Jubilee lines will be busy throughout the day. The Piccadilly line will be busy in the afternoon and evening with spectators heading to and from Earls Court and Wimbledon.

London’s Transport Commissioner, Peter Hendy, said: “Record numbers of passengers have been travelling on public transport and large numbers are expected to watch the Women’s Olympic Marathon, which provides another great opportunity for those without tickets to come out and watch an Olympic event for free.

“If you don’t want to line the route you can also head to the Live Sites or visit one of the many other attractions London has to offer during the Games.

“There will be road closures in London, so please avoid driving in central London where possible.”

Trasnport for London (TfL) will make changes to the Olympic Route Network - the network of roads connecting the Olympic venues which include the suspension of bus lanes and loading bays - this weekend.

Lane restrictions on the A3, A40 and the A406 will be removed overnight on Saturday, August 4 and Sunday, August 5.
