Haringey Council raked in more than £1million in parking fines from just one road last year – making it the second most costly stretch in the country for drivers.

Nearly 40 drivers a day on average were hit with fines in Bounds Green Road, Bounds Green, earning the council £1,002,360 – an eighth of the £8,013,774 it made overall from penalty charge notices (PCNs) during 2011. Only Southampton Row in central London made more money, earning Camden Council £1,198,870.

Figures released last week revealed about 14,000 drivers were caught committing traffic offences on the 1.4mile long Bounds Green Road from a total of 93,605 who were fined across Haringey.

A Haringey Council spokesman said the high total for Bounds Green Road, which links Wood Green High Road with the North Circular, was due to roadworks taking place to widen the North Circular.

But the same road generated £907,897 in fines in 2010 – just £100,000 less than last year.

The council said the fines were mainly issued due to “contraventions of box junctions and a ‘no U-turn’ on Bounds Green Road”, adding: “The level of contraventions was higher than previous years due to extensive TfL roadworks on the nearby A406 as drivers tried to take shortcuts, to avoid congestion, which involved completing this banned U-turn.”
