The awards were set up in 1999 in memory of Andy Ludlow, former director of housing and social services at Haringey Council.

A refuge centre for victims of domestic violence has been shortlisted for a major award.

Hearthstone, Haringey Council’s Domestic Violence and Support Centre, is up for an Andy Ludlow Homelessness Award for its services to those trying to escape abuse at home. It provides accommodation, benefits and counselling.

The facility, in Commerce Road, Wood Green, could also win a share of £65,000 as part of the prize for further investment in its services.

Cllr Richard Watson, cabinet member for communities, said: “This is welcome recognition both for the important services provided by Hearthstone and the dedication of the staff who work there.

“Domestic violence is a devastating crime and Hearthstone provides a much needed safe and supportive environment for victims, helping them get their lives back on track quickly.”

The awards were set up in 1999 in memory of Andy Ludlow, former director of housing and social services at Haringey Council, who died at the age of 51.

They are sponsored by the London Housing Foundation, charity Shelter and the 33 London boroughs and run by London Councils.
