Campaigners laid wreaths outside a recently closed Tottenham mental health day centre to highlight the plight of the smaller “communities within the community”.

The “fond floral farewell” outside Six8Four Day Centre - complete with trumpeter playing the Last Post - was designed to raise awareness of the loss of facilities used by the most vulnerable Haringey residents.

It was also a chance for the users to say goodbye to the High Road centre, which was for many an important source of support.

One user - who preferred to remain anonymous - said: “It feels like they are ripping the heart out of the community. I believe there are communities within the community, and the minority communities are the ones which are being forgotten.

“The Six8Four Centre gave people structure in their lives and made them feel part of the community. It’s helped me develop my confidence.”

Centre users now have to travel to Turnpike Lane, where the next nearest centre is.

Event organiser Mhairi McGhee, of the Haringey Disability First Consortium, said: “We are really concerned - not only with the cuts, but with the way in which they have happened.”

A council spokesman said: “Users of the centre have had their individual care needs reviewed and all people in need of ongoing care and support continue to receive it at alternative centres.

“We sincerely apologise for any distress, disruption and inconvenience this change in service has caused people.”
