Haringey’s schools have used an extra £8.8million in government funding on career advisors, hardship funds and literacy programmes, it has been revealed.

The spending came to light after Liberal Democrat MP for Hornsey and Wood Green, Lynne Featherstone, wrote to every school in the borough asking how they had used their share of the pupil premium.

It is the first time Haringey schools have received the extra government money which was previously reserved for inner London boroughs.

For years Haringey schools have been hamstrung by having to pay teachers’ wages with inner-London weighting while being funded as an outer London borough by the government.

Ms Featherstone, who campaigned to get Haringey reclassified, as did the council, said the pupil premium has been spent on measures including increased pastoral support and in direct efforts to raise boys’ attainment. In addition extra staff have been recruited to improve literacy and numeracy.
