Help and ideas needed to keep 100-year-old Harringay swimming pool afloat

A Harringay pool which has taught thousands of children to swim over the last 100 years is in desperate need of an upgrade - and residents are being asked for their views on what should be done.

South Harringay Junior School’s pool has been used by local children ever since it opened in the early 1900s and is still used by about 800 children each week for lessons. But the Mattison Road pool is now sorely in need of refurbishment.

Parent Tessa Parsons said: “It is a lovely little pool, but it’s starting to show its age.”

It needs a new £30,000 plant, which keeps the water clean, as well as a redesign of the Victorian building to make it better suited for modern needs.

An architect has suggested the redesign - which will hopefully increase the size changing rooms, improve disabled access and create a better waiting area for parents - is likely to cost in the region of £200,000.

Ms Parsons, along with fellow parent Lisa Jaffé, headteacher Ian Scotchbrook and junior school caretaker Michael Gordon, are now pushing forward with plans to improve the pool and its building, starting with consultations on Sunday between 2pm and 4pm, next Wednesday between 3.30pm and 5pm and next Friday between 9am and 10am.

Ms Parsons said: “We want to consult with the community in terms of what they want to see and collect some data.”

It is hoped that feedback can be used to back any applications for funding for such a large project.

The consultations are also a chance to increase community awareness of the building - the pool and upstairs room of which can be hired out privately.
