At first glance, this appears to be simply an old picture of two sets of twins – yet a small inscription on the back reveals a much more interesting history.

It appears this young musical foursome – named as Laurie and John Dowson and Fanny and Rosemary Filippi – became more than friends as they grew up.

In fact, Laurie would go on to marry Rosemary and John would wed Fanny.

But the inscription on the back of the photo reveals nothing else – and it has left staff and volunteers wanting to know more since it was anonymously donated to Crouch End’s Marie Curie Cancer Care shop last week.

They are now appealing for anyone who knows anything about the two couples to come forward and fill them in on the details of the unusual unions.

Manager Patrick Ross said: “It would be good if anybody who knows anything about it could get in touch so we can find out the true story behind the picture.”

Volunteer and Crouch End councillor David Winskill added: “I am sure there is a really interesting story here.”

Anyone who knows about either couple is asked to email flora.drury@archant.co.uk, or call 020 7433 6209.
