Eric Pickles - the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Governments - walked around the areas most affected by the events last summer on Wednesday (February 15).

It is the second time Mr Pickles has visited the area since August and he was impressed with how the residents have pulled together.

Mr Pickles said: “The most powerful, enduring image of the disturbances is not of the minority of rioters but the majority of local people and local businesses that all came together in Tottenham with Haringey Council to rebuild their communities.

“The people of Tottenham can take pride in how they have gone about restoring their community. Because of this energetic approach Tottenham’s community is already starting to turn the corner and look ahead to future growth and prosperity.”

Mr Pickles also met with Haringey Council leaders, who were themselves impressed with his “genuine” interest in Tottenham.

Council leader Claire Kober jumped at the opportunity to press Mr Pickles for more on-going support, handing him a letter asking the minister to - among other things = make a swift decision on Spur’s Northumberland Development project, explore opportunities for transport improvements and offer financial support to the council’s Family Intervention Project, which supports troubled families.

“We hope that he will now take our concerns on board and support the council and the community as we seek to build back better for Tottenham and together make sure the area enjoys the future it deserves,” she said.
