Laughing mob beat man senseless
A LAUGHING mob punched and kicked an innocent man unconscious for fun in Wood Green on Monday - as an onlooker filmed the vile scene on a mobile phone.
Witnesses described a group of up to 15 teenage males beating their 37-year-old victim to the ground, outside Wood Green Tube Station, before they fled into the Noel Park Estate, around 10.35pm.
Police are now concerned that the footage may be posted on the internet and have appealed to anyone who has seen the clips to come forward.
The victim's injuries were first thought to be life threatening as he had swallowed his tongue during the attack and had been left unconscious.
It is understood that the quick-witted actions of a passer-by who administered first aid saved his life.
Only a CT scan in hospital confirmed that he would survive his injuries, which included severe bruising to his head and neck.
Police are looking for a number of suspects who have been captured on the area's sophisticated CCTV network.
One of the teenagers was armed with a metal crutch and is believed to frequent the Hollywood Green area. The victim was not robbed of any possessions, leaving the motive for the attack a mystery.
Detective Sergeant Paul Cheadle, of Haringey CID, said: "The victim had swallowed his tongue and it's only thanks to the actions of a passer-by administering first aid that he is still alive."
On viewing CCTV footage of the incident police noticed someone filming the incident on their mobile phone.
It is not clear whether it was a passer-by or a member of the gang making the film.
Police are interested to speak to anyone who captured the incident on their mobile or if they are sent it or see it on the internet.
They would also like to hear from the driver of a passing vehicle who shouted out to a police officer at the scene.
The attackers are described as black and around 15 years old.
Anyone with information should call DS Cheadle on 020 8345 0806 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
