A SCHOOLBOY and two workmen suffered burns when a gas explosion ripped through the ground floor of a house.

A wall of fire ripped through the terraced house in Craven Park Road, South Tottenham, just before 11am on Monday.

The 11-year-old boy, the only member of the family home at the time, sustained minor "flash burns" in the blast, but the workmen, aged 64 and 32, were more seriously injured. The cause is thought to have been a spark from an electric drill igniting a gas leak.

The blast blew out a rear window of the house and an internal wall, wrecked the kitchen and moved the roof.

Firefighters had to stabilise the casualties before paramedics arrived.

Station officer John Thornton, of Tottenham fire station, said: "One had quite bad burns to his hands and face, and the other two had flash burns. The boy was bowled over by the explosion.

"Two workmen were putting down new floorboards in the front hallway, and unknown to them they had dislodged a gas pipe. They turned on the electric drill and there was a rather big bang. They had a very, very lucky escape. The whole house could have gone up."

Fire crews turned off the gas supply in the street but no neighbours had to be evacuated.

The boy was taken to Homerton Hospital in east London as a precaution and released later that day.

The workmen were still being treated for burns at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead as the Journal went to press. Their injuries are not thought to be life threatening. The Health and Safety Executive is investigating the blast.
