Anti-mice device a winner for Tony

A DIY device to keep mice out of homes has won a Hornsey builder a top prize at the British Invention Show.
Mouse mesh is a humane way to stop rodents and is the brainchild of Tony Carr, 48, who won a gold medal for Innovation of the Year at the trade convention at Alexandra Palace.
The mesh cover is placed over airbricks used to keep air circulating at the bottom of houses - which are recognised as one of the most common ways mice enter homes.
Mr Carr, of Hawthorne Road, said: "Once they get in they're under your floor, it's like a five-star hotel and they can come in and munch away. They really are a health hazard.
"This device stops them getting in but it doesn't stop air flow."
A standard two bedroom house has about four airbricks and the mesh costs from £5.95 to 9.95 a cover.
Mr Carr, a builder for 30 years, started Mouse Mesh in Bounds Green industrial estate 18 months ago after his wife was startled by a mouse.
"I came in and my wife's frantic in the kitchen saying we've got a mouse. I got some poison and got rid of them," he said. "A couple of weeks later they came back. I realised it was the airbricks and put mesh over it and that's where the idea came from."
Mr Carr is in talks about supplying councils. For details visit www.mousemesh.com
