SPARTAN SOUTH MIDLANDS PREMIER DIVISION

Biggleswade United 0

Haringey Borough 1

DEBUTANT Lee Allen fired Borough out of the relegation zone on Saturday as Tom Loizou's side made the most of their first league game since December 5.

Allen, who had only signed for Haringey the previous day, netted the second-half winner after Craig Scotcher - who was also making his first appearance - had seen his header from a corner saved.

The welcome away win at relegation rivals Biggleswade United allowed Loizou's side to leapfrog Kentish Town out of the bottom two, and narrow the gap from United to five points - with three games in hand.

Borough inevitably looked rusty in just their second game in eight weeks, but Biggleswade were unable to find a cutting edge to finish their approach work, and Borough forced themselves back into the game.

Bosun Adebaki was denied by a goalline clearance as his powerful header flew towards the top corner, and the Haringey defender was just off target from a similar position soon after.

David Boal found himself through on goal before the break, but couldn't get the power in his finish to by-pass keeper Adam Lawrence.

The visitors were fortunate to escape after the break when Emanuel Langlais rushed a quick flick wide of goal, despite having time to turn and pick his spot.

At the other end Lloyd Opara repeatedly worked himself into promising positions but unfortunately he had left his shooting boots behind, only testing Lawrence on one occasion when the keeper got down to turn a close-range effort against the foot of the post.

Just past the hour-mark Loizou introduced the robust Scotcher for his debut, and it proved to be the turning point. Five minutes later he had a hand in the winning goal, drawing a save from Lawrence before Allen reacted to slam the loose ball into the net.

Opara missed further chances to steady the nerves, but United never managed to engineer any close-range scares, and Haringey finished the match on the front foot.

Borough travel to Langford this Saturday before hosting Dunstable Town at Coles Park next Tuesday evening, kicking off at 7.45pm.

Haringey Borough: Christofi, Douse, Haspineall, Denteli, Adebaki, Locker-Townsend (Scotcher), Charalambos, Boal, Allen, Opara, Georgiou. Unused subs: Mitchell, Eberendu, Julius, Vranceanu.
